"Whispers of Legacy" The Art of John Corbidge
....
...................
Opening on Friday, 9 October, this exclusive exhibition presents a selection of significant works curated by Anna Agapiou and drawn directly from the private collection of the artist’s daughter, Melissa Corbidge. Presenting these paintings from his daughter’s collection, offers art lovers, collectors and to a new generation of art enthusiasts, a rare intimate and deeply personal glimpse into Corbidge’s artistic legacy and vision. John Corbidge (1935-2003) was born in Sheffield, UK. He showed an early talent for drawing and painting, alongside an interest in poetry, music, and ancient civilisations. Corbidge trained at the Sheffield College of Art, receiving a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. Graduating in 1956, Corbidge left England for the Mediterranean, beginning a lifelong pattern of travel and residence abroad. At first, he lived in France and Italy, between Menton on the Cote d’Azur and the towns of Sirolo and Numana on the Adriatic coast, supporting himself as a painter. He subsequently spent extended periods in Greece and Cyprus, working across painting, drawing, ceramics, murals, bas-reliefs, and poetry. While maintaining Cyprus as the primary base for his work, Corbidge moved away from painting the cold, grey industrial landscapes of Northern England, to embrace Mediterranean Cubism fused with ancient iconography and applying the vibrant colours of the Mediterranean. In his later years, he established a studio in Lania, a village near Limassol, where he lived until his death. During his lifetime, Corbidge’s work was shown internationally, receiving praised attention from art critics. Corbidge left behind a body of work held in collections and exhibited across the places where he lived and worked. An opening reception will be addressed by Melissa Corbidge on Friday, 9 October at 7pm. The exhibition will remain open to the public until 15 October.
Σπούδασε στο Κολλέγιο Τεχνών του Σιέφιλντ πριν πάρει υποτροφία στο Slade School of Fine Arts του University College of London, από όπου αποφοίτησε το 1956.
